How to Find the Right Therapist For You

By March 26, 2024No Comments

Therapy is a unique experience for each person. Each person comes to therapy looking for something different and with their own story. Therapy is a very personal and vulnerable experience, and it’s important to find someone who feels like the right fit for your needs and values. Being seen, understood, validated, and cared for by your therapist is something that you should consider. The therapeutic relationship is one of the most unique relationships and is unlike any other. The unconditional positive regard that therapists offer their clients can be healing in and of itself. Finding a therapist that you feel that way is the goal.

What are you seeking therapy for?

The first thing to think about is why you are going to therapy right now. Are you struggling with depression, anxiety, relationship problems, or a life transition? Are you just looking to get to know yourself better? Maybe you’re looking for a certain set of coping skills or working on setting boundaries in your life? These are just a few reasons why someone might be coming to therapy. Knowing why you are coming to therapy can help you find a therapist who specializes in what you want to work on.

Is there a certain kind of therapy you are looking for?

Are you looking for a specific approach to therapy, such as cognitive behavioral therapy or dialectical behavior therapy? Knowing what your preference is for your therapist approach can help narrow down your list of options. Do you want a more directive therapist or someone who lets you lead sessions? If you’re unsure of the approach to therapy that would be a good fit for you, those are questions you can ask any potential therapist. These are all things to consider when looking for a therapist.

What financial factors might influence your therapy journey?

How do you want to pay for therapy? Therapy is a financial and time investment. Do you want to use your insurance or an HSA fund? Are you open to private pay? Many private pay therapists offer something called a super bill that you can submit to your insurance to get some of your session covered. Talk to your insurance company to see what your options are. Many therapy offices have interns who offer sliding scales to help make therapy more affordable and accessible. Interns are supervised by licensed therapists and can be a great option for more affordable services.

How to search for a therapist that fits your needs.

Once you have a better idea of the type of therapist you are looking for, you can start exploring options and seeing who has openings. Psychology Today and Google are good places to start looking for a therapist near you. Read reviews and see what other people’s experiences are. Asking friends and family if they have any recommendations can also be a good place to start. Primary care doctors also may have a list of referrals or therapists who they think would be a good fit for your needs. You can also check local mental health organizations in your area to see if they have recommendations.

It’s important to make sure your therapist is licensed and has experience treating your concerns. You can ask any potential therapist about their theoretical approach and check to see if it aligns with your expectations and comfort level. Location is also important to consider. Do you want a therapist right in your neighborhood, or would you prefer to get out of your usual space to see someone? Is their location accessible, and does it feel convenient for you to travel to see them? You’ll be more likely to show up to your appointments if the location feels like a good fit for you.

Most therapists offer consultation calls so you can get a good feel for who they are and what they are like as a therapist. Therapists are open to you asking questions to better understand their style. They want to be a good fit for you too! This is a good chance to get a sense of their personality and approach to therapy. This could be a good tool to use as you explore who the right therapist is for you.

How do you know that a therapist is a good fit for you?

One of the most important factors is whether you feel comfortable talking to your therapist. Therapists have an unconditional positive regard for their clients, and they want you to be able to feel comfortable bringing up difficult things to them in session. Therapy is a space to be vulnerable, and your therapist should help you feel comfortable doing that. They are here to support, encourage, and bear witness to your story.

It’s important to trust your gut here; if someone doesn’t feel like a good fit, don’t hesitate to try someone else. Therapists understand that not everyone fits with everyone! Research has shown that one of the most important parts of a client feeling better is the therapeutic relationship, so it is important to find a therapist that you can trust. There should be a feeling that you can be yourself in session and that your therapist won’t judge you for anything you might share.
